City of Torrington Economic Development Commission
Minutes January 4, 2011


Members Present:  Cindy Donaldson, Bill Battle, Jim Thibault, Nancy Sieller, George Noujaim,  

Members Absent:  Dawn Gutowski, JoAnn Ryan, TJ Zappulla, Greg Mele,
Commissioner Donaldson called the meeting to order at 5:25pm

1. Open meeting to Public

Commissioner Sieller, made the motion to open the meeting to the public and Commissioner Noujaim seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

2.   Approval of the Minutes
Commissioner Thibault, made the motion to approve December 7, 2010 minutes Commissioner Sieller seconded the motion, the motion carried.  

3. ACT Update:
The MSMP committee has been meeting to plan next summer’s event. They anticipate the response to be favorable and they are looking forward to another great year.
The Singer Songwriter Network has a full year of events planned with the first event scheduled for Monday January 10, 2011 at T-Place on the Winsted Road. The event will feature at least four local acts, admission is free, and donations for Fisher House will be accepted at the door.

4. Glen Royal for the North End Merchant’s Association:
Glen Royals, VP of the North End Association, was invited to the January meeting. He gave us a history of the Association as well as the numerous community projects they have contributed to. Commissioners discussed ways to collaborate with the Association. Glen will bring it up at their next monthly meeting and perhaps the March EDC meeting can meet during the North End association’s monthly meeting.

5.  TDC Update
Cindy updated the commission on the TDC’s progress. TDC will be appearing before the January 12th P&Z meeting to submit the site plan application for phase 1 of the project. They are encouraged with progress that has been made and anticipate a favorable meeting next week.

6. Blog Update
Cindy would like commissioners to submit information to be included in the EDC blog. Please email your ideas to her attention.

7.  New Business:
Commissioner Battle informed the group of two new restaurants in the North End. Erica’s coffee shop and a newly renovated Chesty’s Tavern . Erica’s is serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and Chesty’s will now have a new pool table and expanded menu. Rose Ponte announced the new BEEP grant program. Any commercial business that installs energy efficient windows, lights, insulation or solar panels will be eligible for a 50% grant for the first $5000. Applications will be available at the Mayor’s office or Office of Economic Development.

8 Adjournment-  At 6:23  PM Commissioner Battle made a motion to adjourn,  Commissioner Noujaim  seconded the motion. The motion carried.
